My new Canon A520 Powershot

Tag:No Tags

Got this as a replacement for my old camera, a Canon A70 PowerShot. About three months ago my A70 LCD just went black and is not displaying any pictures or images. So I sent it to our local Canon representive to repair it. Well about 2 months later they informed me that they will replace my A70 with A520.

Well what can I say except to agree with the proposal. The A520 is not bad, from the specification it has similar functions to A70 so I think it is an equivalent replacement. So I promptly agreed on the spot.

Nearly a month later my A520 arrived and it was exciting to pick it up. Well I am more than happy with the A520. It is much smaller than A70, uses only 2 AA batteries as compared to 4 in the A70. It has more or less similar functions as the A70, both are 4.0 megapixel camera but A520 has new features too like the “Special Scene” feature. This feature comprise of 8 preconfigured scene modes which you can choose to take photographs. Example for the “Kids & Pets” mode, this is suitable for taking subjects that moved around, such as children and pets, without missing photo opportunities. The other “Special Scenes” are :

  1. Foliage
  2. Snow
  3. Beach
  4. Fireworks
  5. Underwater
  6. Indoor
  7. Night Snapshot

That’s quite a collection of features isn’t it? Also A520 comes with direct print function where images stored in the camera’s memory card can be printed out on a printer directly. You will need a cable to connect to the printer and the printer must be direct print compatible printers which most printer manufaturers including Canon are producing now.

I am still palying around with the A520 and before ending this post I like to mention that there is just one small ” nickpit” about A520, that is the storage media. Well it does not support Compact Flash(CF) as in A70. It is using SD media and included in this replacement, Canon supplied me with a 16MB media card. You can’t do a lot with 16MB and I had a collection of CF cards with me for my previous A70. Well I can’t use these CF cards and guess I have to auction these to buy the SD media cards. This just a small inconvinience on my part, overall as I said earlier I am very happy with my Canon A520.
